Making Yourself a Priority

In the past, I may have been under the false impression that putting myself first was selfish. If I took time for self-care, I was being too self-centered. If I was focused on my own goals and career, I was narrow-minded. If I decided to dress up and do my makeup, I was being narcissistic. Anyone else ever have these thoughts, or just me? 

Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s not selfish, self-centered, narrow-minded, or narcissistic to make yourself a priority, even if your brain tries to convince you otherwise. Focusing on yourself allows a time for reflection, re-connection, and growth. Plus, you can’t pour from an empty cup! In order to help others, you must first help yourself. 

Consider this: We take our cars in for routine maintenance all the time. If your car is having issues, the “check engine” light will come on. We all know this means it’s time for maintenance, and we never accuse the car of being selfish for wanting to be serviced. It’s expected, and we want the car to run efficiently, so we oblige. 

It’s important to allow yourself this same luxury. Provide routine maintenance in the form of self-care, and constantly reconnect with yourself to be on the lookout for your own check engine light. If you feel that something is off, it’s time to focus on healing and growing through it.

Take time to reconnect with yourself this week, add some additional self-care into your routine, and don’t feel guilty about it! 

Here are a few suggestions:

  • You don’t have to say yes to everyone and everything. 
  • Breathe. Take some quiet moments for deep breaths to slow your breathing, calm your mind, and help you be present in the moment.
  • Recognize when it’s time for rest.
