In order to truly experience connection in life, we need to open ourselves up to vulnerability. So what is vulnerability? It is the quality or state of being exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally.
This can be in friendships, romantic relationships, and even interactions with strangers. The fear of putting ourselves out there as our true, authentic selves opens up the possibility for rejection, pain, and discomfort. Therefore, we shy away from taking chances or trying new things.
WHY?
Because we are afraid of being vulnerable. We think that if we avoid these moments in life, we will also avoid the pain and negative outcomes, and that will result in a better life. But that’s not necessarily true. By holding ourselves back and refusing to be vulnerable, we are missing out on so much that life has to offer.
So, how can we become more vulnerable? I’ve got a few ideas.
- Allow yourself to believe you are WORTHY. You are worthy of receiving positive feedback from others. You are worthy of reaching a goal. You are worthy of finding love. You are worthy of taking up space.
- Recognize the triggers. It can be hard to go all in and be vulnerable in the moment. Knowing the things that trigger it for you can help you identify these opportunities in the future, so that your first instinct is no longer to immediately run in the other direction.
- Stop resisting. Even though you are now able to identify the triggers, you are still going to want to lock up and resist a vulnerable moment. During these times, remind yourself that it’s okay to have feelings about the situation, good and bad. Take a deep breath, and allow yourself to process any emotions.
- Trust in yourself. You are strong enough to handle the outcome of this vulnerable situation, no matter the outcome. This could result in the best experience you have had in years or open the doors for opportunities you’ve been dreaming of for a long time. You will be able to handle the success when it arrives. Even if the result is shame or pain, you will be able to handle that as well. You are strong enough, and you are worthy.
It can be incredibly uncomfortable, especially your first few conscious tries, but it is so worth it to allow yourself to become vulnerable and experience life in a less restricted way.
