It’s challenging to live in the present.
From the moment we enter school, we’re asked to consider what we want to be when we grow up, set goals for ourselves, and consistently look to the future.
While setting goals and working towards them is great, we don’t want to focus on the future at the expense of enjoying our day-to-day lives. If you’ve spent any time practicing meditation or learning about it, you already know the peace that can come from immersing ourselves in the moment.
We chose Peace of Mind for May’s box theme because we spend so much time anticipating the future and reflecting on the past that we forget to love the moment we’re in.
What is mindfulness?
- Appreciating each day for what it brings
- Making conscious decisions
- Choosing to see and focus on positives
- Accepting that life comes one day at a time
When we practice mindfulness, we begin to see the world through a clearer set of lenses, finding that some obstacles aren’t quite as daunting as we thought they were or that some decisions are more easily made than we previously perceived them to be. We’ll laugh a little more often, dream a little higher, and love a little deeper.

Before moving on with your day, I encourage you to close your eyes, take a few deep, slow breaths, and appreciate your present moment. It doesn’t matter if you’re stuck at work, sitting in a traffic jam, or running from one errand to the next. Find some aspect of your day that you are enjoying – the blue sky, the rain clouds, the cool breeze, your favorite song that came on the radio, the inside joke you and your BFF laughed over in the office, watching that ridiculous cat video on the internet, or an encouraging phone call from a loved one, etc. – and watch your day seem a little brighter and joyful.
