Social media is saturated with shiny, glowing images of successful people explaining how they have changed their lives and so can you. “It’s easy,” they say. “It’ll be a fun journey,” they say. And sometimes it can be. Today, I want to talk about when it’s not.
There will be times on your personal growth journey when you feel discouraged, exhausted, or even broken, and I want you to know that it’s okay. At these times, remind yourself that it is not a personal growth “short sprint”; it’s a journey, and it takes time and effort. The “results” photos you are comparing yourself to on social media took time and effort, too, even though it may not seem like it.
Here are 3 ways to reset your mind when you feel personal growth isn’t happening as quickly and as easily as you’d like it to.
- Take a social media break. This is a good way to reset once in a while anyway, but especially if you find yourself subconsciously comparing your journey to others. Take a step away from scrolling and fill that time with creating and reciting affirmations instead.
- Learn from failures. We’ve all heard that making mistakes is a good way to learn. How about learning from others’ mistakes? It can be incredibly humbling to read about how successful people, such as Oprah or JK Rowling, only got to their level of success after experiencing hardship and failure. It’s a great reminder that personal growth doesn’t happen overnight.
- Love yourself. Put your physical and mental health, emotions, and family needs first. Maybe a day of self-care could help you realign with your goals and boost your self confidence.
